Self-described ‘Superthief’ from Deerfield to stand trial in 1970s Boca rapes

Late on a Saturday night a long time ago, a 15-year-old Boca Raton teen was baby-sitting two small neighborhood kids.

Moments after hearing knocks at the front door, the baby sitter turned toward a hallway near the kitchen and faced a man wearing pantyhose over his face and pointing a pistol at her.

“Don’t worry,” the intruder said, before proceeding to rape her in a bedroom. “I won’t hurt you. Don’t scream.”

It was about 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, 1976. Almost 36 years to the day after this attack, Boca Raton police accused John MacLean — a notorious burglar and convicted sex offender from Deerfield Beach — of being the man in the disguise.
