The troops who searched for Bergdahl deliver heartfelt testimony

Several soldiers and a Navy SEAL testified Oct. 25 about the risky, all-out efforts to find Bowe Bergdahl after the soldier’s 2009 disappearance in Afghanistan. Troops and commanders went without sleep. Shirts and socks disintegrated on soldiers during weeks-long patrols. And several service members were seriously wounded — including the Navy commando whose career was ended by AK-47 fire.

The testimony came at a sentencing hearing for Bergdahl, who walked away from a remote post in Afghanistan and was held by Taliban allies for five years. He pleaded guilty to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy last week and faces a maximum of life in prison.

The wounded SEAL, retired Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer James Hatch, said his team’s helicopters came under fire as they landed in an area near the Pakistan border where they had information on Bergdahl’s possible whereabouts. He said the mission in the days after Bergdahl disappeared was hastily planned,

This is why there’s no excuse for Hollywood to screw up military uniforms

Every time a new Hollywood blockbuster comes out about the military, veterans and active duty service members get defensive — and for good reason.

The military is very detail-oriented and the veteran community can spot every mistake in technique, procedure, or uniform wear. It pains us watching films that can’t even get the amount of flags on our uniform correct.

As much of a master craftsman as Stanley Kubrick was when creating films, he’s not without his flaws. For instance, that scene in Full Metal Jacket when Joker is doing pull-ups and then Private Pyle gets hell for not being able to do one.

But Gunny Hartman should have been on Joker’s ass just as much since none of his should have counted (although it could be argued that it was

Conspiracy theories about Las Vegas shooting plant seeds of doubt, intrigue

Do you believe the gunman behind the mass shooting in Las Vegas acted alone? Or was he merely a fall guy behind a more complex and sinister killing assault?

Was there another shooter, or two, in that 32nd-floor hotel room? Were other shots fired from the hotel’s fourth floor? Or do you wonder if the Oct. 1 shooting was a “false flag” attack from the “deep state” to mark the 100-year anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution?

Conspiracy theories abound about what truly happened that night, marking the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. And readers of this column didn’t hesitate to contact me with their armchair theories behind the horrific yet mysterious attack.

“It just doesn’t add up,” said Adam Thoreson, of Crown Point, who left me a voicemail one day after the shooting.

Everything That’s Leaving Netflix in October | Mental Floss

The Big Bang Theory, which has held the title of television’s most popular comedy for several years now, and will return for its 11th season on Monday, September 25th. In the meantime, geek out with these facts about the long-running cerebral comedy on the 10th anniversary of its premiere.

1. THE SHOW WASN’T PITCHED IN A TRADITIONAL WAY.

Instead of writing up a premise—which includes outlines of the characters and the long-term vision for the show—and pitching it to CBS, co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady revealed at PaleyFest in 2009 that for their pitch, they wrote a complete script, hired actors, and, as Lorre explained, “put on a show” for CBS president Les Moonves. Lorre found the experience to be “crazy,” but it obviously worked.

2. IT TOOK TWO PILOTS FOR THE SHOW TO GET PICKED UP TO SERIES.

The show filmed two different pilots, because CBS didn’t like the first

‘Amelia Earhart’ coming to Kent State

NEW PHILADELPHIA — The Famous American Women series is coming to Kent State University at Tuscarawas as Carol Starre-Kmiecik will perform a one-woman show as the historic Amelia Earhart on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Founders Hall auditorium. The event is sponsored by the College Club of Tuscarawas and is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Earhart was a record-breaking American pilot and the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. A champion for the advancement of women in aviation, Earhart disappeared somewhere over the Pacific in 1937 in an attempt to be the first woman to fly around the world, resulting in one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the twentieth century.

Starre-Kmiecik, who also wrote the scripts for the series, has been performing on stage for over 35 years and has appeared
