In handwritten letter, former ND man allegedly claims 3 Alcatraz prisoners ‘barely’ survived 1962 escape – and that …

And if so, are they still alive, nearly 56 years later?

To this day, Frank Morris, Clarence Anglin and John Anglin remain the only people who have escaped Alcatraz and never been found – a disappearance that is one of the country’s most notorious unsolved mysteries.

The prevailing theory is that Morris and the Anglin brothers drowned after leaving Alcatraz Island and attempting to cross the frigid San Francisco Bay.

But in a newly surfaced letter sent to San Francisco police in 2013 and obtained by CBS affiliate KPIX, a man claiming to be one of the escapees said all three of the prisoners survived the attempt – but he was the only one still living.

“My name is John Anglin,” the handwritten letter began. “I escape [sic] from Alcatraz in June 1962 with my brother Clarence and Frank Morris. I’m 83 years old and in bad shape. I have cancer. Yes we all

Why Rian Johnson didn’t reveal more about Snoke in The Last Jedi

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi swam the depths of its main characters’ stories, digging into Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) past and parentage and bringing to light the vulnerabilities and ardent desires of Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). It also explored the struggle between light and dark that both Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) faced. But one figure fans hoped to discover more about than they actually did was Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis).

During a QA session ahead of the 71st annual British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) ceremony, The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson revealed why he was stingy about giving up information relating to Snoke, and why audiences didn’t get to glean from the film additional details on the villain’s past.

“In this particular story, it’s much more like the original trilogy, where with Snoke if you think about the

These are the greatest unsolved mysteries of 2017 – NZ Herald

We might have uncovered the answers of a few mysteries this year, but if we’ve learned anything, it’s that we still know very little, about a lot.

Despite our technological ability in this modern world there are many mysteries that continue to haunt us. How did Sherri Papini survive her kidnap? Why were these medieval bones buried in such a puzzling way? How did this NFL player defy gravity?

Californians sped through flames to escape for a third time

VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — They ran for their lives by the thousands when devastating wildfires raced across a huge swath of brush-covered Southern California hillsides, and they survived — even if in many cases their homes didn’t.

Some lost everything. Others returned to find homes still standing but in danger a second time when flames that had seemed to spare them returned. Others told of driving through a wall of flames to safety.

Here are some of their stories:

___

Brian Bromberg and Wendy Frank had just saved their beloved horses from a raging wildfire for the second time when they experienced their own brush with death — for the third time.

The couple, who live in the mountainous artist colony of Ojai, had already escaped flames that had burned down neighbors’ homes and had gone back

Butterfly emerges from quantum simulation – SpaceDaily

Quantum simulators, which are special-purpose quantum computers, will help researchers identify materials with new and useful properties. This enticing future has just taken a step forward thanks to a collaboration between Google and researchers at universities in California, Singapore and Greece.

The international team used photons in Google’s quantum chip to simulate the surprising and beautiful pattern of the ‘Hofstadter butterfly’, a fractal structure characterizing the behaviour of electrons in strong magnetic fields. The results, published 1 December in Science, show how quantum simulators are starting to live up to their promise as powerful tools.

“We’ve always had this idea that we can use photons to simulate and better understand nature. Our collaboration puts this into practice,” says Dimitris Angelakis at the Centre for Quantum Technologies, National University of Singapore.

The feat was performed on Google’s chain of nine superconducting quantum bits (qubits) by collaborators at Google and the University of California Santa
