I-Team: Strict standards in place to issue Amber Alerts – WTVD

With the search for Mariah Woods still underway, the ABC11 I-Team is going beyond the headline to answer questions about other missing children and the Amber Alert process.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, active cases remain for at least 66 missing children in North Carolina, including Woods, who was last seen on November 26. Still, state officials sounded Amber Alerts just 11 times so far in 2017.

“If you issue too many alarms, the public’s attention span decreases,” Sgt. Mike Baker, with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, explains to ABC11. “When people are driving on the highway or watching the news at home we want to make sure that Amber Alert draws their attention.

Created in 1996, the Amber Alert was named for Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl from Arlington, TX, who was abducted and found dead in a pond foru days later. Officially,

DropBox alerts Marietta police to child pornography

A Marietta man faces child pornography charges after officials from the DropBox file sharing service alerted authorities of sexually explicit videos of girls as young as 5 years old posted on their site, arrest warrants show.

Raymond Smalley, 29, was arrested after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received a tip that five videos containing suspected child pornography were discovered in an account run by someone with the username “Ray Small,” the warrant said. The agency obtained a subpoena for ATT records linking the IP address to a Haverhill Court home belonging to Smalley’s grandmother, jail records show. The GBI then notified Marietta police, who made the arrest.

Records show the videos were stored on Smalley’s DropBox account sometime between November and March.

“Internet service providers routinely check user accounts for illegal material, namely child pornography,” the warrant reads. “This was the case when DropBox found five videos

Sheriff asks residents to sign-up to receive local alerts

Rush County 911 has partnered with Nixle to implement its Community Notification System to alert residents in real-time for localized emergency situations and relevant community advisories.

As a resident, there are several simple ways to register:

1. Text your ZIPCODE to 888777 from your mobile phone

2. Go to Rush County WEBSITE (www.rushcounty.in.gov) and sign up via the Nixle Widget

Once registered, residents will receive a confirmation text to their mobile device. Residents may also customize their alert settings by going to www.nixle.com and creating a User Profile.

Nixle has been used around the country to help find missing seniors, evacuate flooded areas, and capture dangerous criminals shortly after a crime has happened. The power in the system is also its diversity of content, allowing not only those emergency alerts, but informing residents of road closures, city parades, government meetings, and other “want to know” information.

During the Rush County Fair, residents may register or

How Facebook’s AMBER Alerts tool could help find missing children in 12 countries

Since it launched 21 years ago after the tragic death of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman in Arlington, Texas, the AMBER Alert system has helped families and authorities successfully recover 868 missing children.

But more than 460,000 children — runaways, abductions, lost or injured kids — go missing every year in the U.S., plus many more around the world. Facebook, whose user base is now nearly 2 billion-strong, wants to leverage its expansive network to help get more children back home.

In honor of International Missing Children’s Day on Thursday, Facebook released a new video explaining how its AMBER Alerts feature, which first launched in the U.S. in 2015, can help amplify the right information about missing children to the right people at the right time.

“People were using our platform to

TBI explains how Amber Alerts are issued for missing children

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – When it comes to missing children and Amber Alerts, many in Tennessee have questions on how the emergency system works. We spoke with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to see how the process works.

In October 2015, pictures of Brooklynne Enix, 2, were everywhere because investigators were working furiously to find her and her dad, Tyler Enix, who was accused of murdering her mom.

“They didn’t sleep when their sister was on that Amber Alert. It’s just so unpredictable and you don’t want to put the worst scenario in your head,” said family member Chris Morrison during a May 2016 interview.

Eventually a good Samaritan in Ohio spotted the car and called 911.

“I just heard an Amber Alert and I think I’m behind the guy,” said Steve Adams to a 911 dispatcher in 2015.
