New movies and TV streaming on Netflix, Amazon, HBO, Hulu and Showtime

“The Crown” (available Friday on Netflix): The second season of the very acclaimed and very award-winning “The Crown” drops Friday on Netflix, with Claire Foy continuing her brilliant run as Queen Elizabeth II. This season will boast plenty of royal drama for the queen, including meeting President Kennedy (Michael C. Hall), Princess Margaret’s relationship with Tony Armstrong-Jones (Matthew Goode), the 1956 Suez crisis, as well as Elizabeth’s ongoing marital conflict with Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (Matt Smith).

The first season of “The Crown” was a stateside success for Netflix, thanks to evergreen interest in all things royal. The return of the show was already highly anticipated, but the recent engagement announcement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle certainly won’t hurt.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (Netflix): The second-best superhero movie of the year (No. 1: “Logan”) flings the lovable rogues to opposite ends of the universe. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is reuniting

Is ‘Fearless’ Based On A True Story? The Amazon Series Isn’t Afraid To Pull From Real Life

The newest addition to Amazon’s amazing series lineup is a fascinating crime drama called Fearless, acquired by Amazon from the UK’s ITV. Per The Guardian, the story follows a fierce human rights lawyer named Emma Banville who tirelessly fights for those clients who seem to have no hope left. When she takes on the case of a murderer who claims he has been wrongfully convicted, she refuses to give up on him until justice has been served. The premise seems familiar, so is Fearless based on a true story?

Catch up on streaming shows: 13 to watch (or skip) on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon

As if trying to keep up with TV series wasn’t already a challenging task, streaming services are apparently devoted to making our eyeballs work overtime.

Netflix is the obvious leader in adding to the TV glut, with near-daily announcements of new deals (“Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” executive producer Shonda RhimesDavid Letterman’s talk show!), and new shows crowding the runway (including “Ozark,” pictured.)

It used to be that Netflix was known for a manageable number of high-profiles series, back in the good old “Orange is the New Black” and “House of Cards” days. Now, the streaming giant is greenlighting so many kinds of shows, from Marvel Comics superhero sagas to old-school sitcoms, keeping track of them all requires superior spreadsheet skills.

Netflix may be the dominant player, but it’s got plenty of company in established streaming services such as Hulu and Amazon Prime, which have steadily added original TV series.
