Human remains found behind Brookeville cemetery identified

A Brookeville resident walking his dogs in a wooded path behind the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery the evening of Sunday, Nov. 12 discovered what appeared to be human bones and contacted police. Police responded and found a shallow grave with skeletal remains.

The remains were sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to be examined.

Yamada, commander of the 4th district, assured those in attendance at a Brookeville town hall meeting on Nov. 20 that there was nothing to show that there was an immediate threat to local residents. He also indicated the possibility that there may have been more than one person was involved with the burial of the remains.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are urging anyone who may have information regarding this death to contact the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070 or contact Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). Callers may remain anonymous.

The skeletal remains found in a wooded area in Brookeville have been identified as a teen from Silver Spring, according to police.

The chief medical examiner’s office in Baltimore determined the body was Harry Ryan Detwiler, 19, of the 10700 block of Margate Road, according to a Montgomery County police press release. His family reported him missing to police in September.

A report on the National Center for Missing Exploited Children website says Detwiler had been missing since May 15 and was last seen in Silver Spring.

A dog walker noticed what appeared to be human bones in the woods on Nov. 12 and called police. When officers arrived, they found a shallow grave with skeletal remains.

Police are investigating the incident as a suspicious
