In Trump era, immigrant rights are top concern for new ACLU-NJ chief

NEWARK — Nearly eight months after President Trump assumed office, the American Civil Liberties Union remains one of Trump’s chief antagonists.

The 97-year-old civil liberties group has targeted past presidents, including Barack Obama for his administration’s use of unmanned drones, but the ACLU has gone after Trump with unusual relish. In July its leader called Trump “a one-man constitutional crisis.”

This is the environment Amol Sinha has stepped into as the new executive director of the ACLU’s chapter in New Jersey, a Democratic stronghold at a time when liberals view the group as a first line of defense against a president they abhor.

Sinha, 32, of Jersey City, sat down with The Jersey Journal in the group’s Market Street office in Newark on Friday, his first day on the job, to discuss his vision for the ACLU-NJ, which now counts 43,000 households as members.

Petersburg Police chief praises department for recent drug busts

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Petersburg Police Chief Kenneth Miller is praising his department after officers made two major drug busts in just a few days.

Last week, police found what they described as a ‘marijuana grow house‘ inside a home in the 400 block of Deerfield Drive. Police also seized marijuana plants, mushrooms, a handgun, shotgun and money. The resident, Robert Riggins, was arrested and charged with several felonies.Then just yesterday, police stopped this car and discovered approximately 6 pounds of marijuana and another gun.

Jupiter police chief says kidnapping was ‘planned and organized’

UPDATE: Dominic Caprio has been found safe. Please check back for updates.

Jupiter Police Chief Frank Kitzerow said Friday that as the search for abducted four-year-old Dominic Caprio continues, authorities will not stop until the child is returned home.

Kitzerow said his agency is working with the FBI, FDLE, The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and local agencies, to find the child who police said was abducted by his nanny Thursday from his mother’s Jupiter home.

Police believe Dominic may be in the custody of his mother’s parents, Elizabeth and Luis Caprio.

Despite the fact that they are the child’s grandparents, Kitzerow said they do have concerns about Dominic’s safety and are taking the abduction very seriously.

‘Just following leads,’ chief says about searches in Sunbury cold case

SUNBURY — Sunbury Police Chief Timothy S. Miller that on Wednesday he searched the former home of Barbara E. Miller, who has been missing for 29 years and presumed dead, and on Thursday searched a pond.

“I’m just following leads,” he said of the searches that were part of the investigation into Miller’s homicide.

The chief , who is not related to the victim, said Thursday that he’d found potential evidence in the Miller’s former home in the 200 block of Penn Street that has been sent to a lab.

And on Thursday, a 55-gallon drum was recovered from a fresh water pond off state  Route 45 between Lewisburg and Montandon, he said. New Cumberland River Rescue personnel assisted in the recovery.
