Police: Calif. teen admits molesting 50 children in California

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a teen who turned himself in to police has confessed to molesting some 50 children over the past years across Southern California.

Police say 18-year-old Joseph Hayden Boston was brought to a Riverside police station Saturday by his mother after he allegedly told her he had sexually assaulted two boys, ages 8 and 4, at a motel.

Officer Ryan Railsback says during an interview Boston confessed to the motel assaults. Railsback says he also admitted molesting about 50 children since the age of 10 in different cities where he had lived.

Officials say Boston was arrested on suspicion of two counts of oral copulation on a child under the age of 10 and jailed in lieu of $1 million bail.

It wasn’t immediately known if Boston has an attorney.

Experts say every second counts in missing children cases

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Every minute counts when it comes to searching for a missing child.

In 2016, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety says Amber Alerts were issued for 10 children in our state. Luckily, all of those children were found.

Experts say those types of success stories are thanks to the hard work, quick thinking, and collaboration between authorities and citizens.

According to ECU’s criminal justice chair, Dr. William Bloss, after 72 hours of searching, it is less likely authorities will find a missing child safe.

Bloss explains the Amber Alert system helps recover children quicker because the alerts create a collaboration between the public and authorities, where citizens can be on the lookout and give officials valuable information.

He also says that it is pretty standard for FBI agents to help in these investigations because authorities know they need

Family abductions are No. 2 cause of missing children in US

Family abductions make up the second-largest number of children who are reported missing in the United States, with the first being runaways, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

About 230,600 children were abducted by family members in the United States in 2013, according to a U.S. Department of Justice study published this year.

To prevent family abductions, a parent (or guardian) should:

• Seek a custody and visitation order to specify the rights of both parents regarding the child.

• Ask a judge to include prevention provisions in the custody order, including the prohibition or unauthorized pickup of the child and restrictions on the removal of the child from his home state.

• Keep updated photos and a complete written description of the child. Have the child fingerprinted and notify schools, child care centers and babysitters of custody orders.

YouTube is cracking down on videos and comments that exploit children

YouTube is taking steps to prevent disturbing videos from reaching children, after a wave of media reports showed how the platform was failing to keep inappropriate content away from youngsters.

“In recent months, we’ve noticed a growing trend around content on YouTube that attempts to pass as family-friendly, but is clearly not,” wrote Johanna Wright, YouTube’s vice president of product management, in a blog post dated Nov. 22. “While some of these videos may be suitable for adults, others are completely unacceptable, so we are working to remove them from YouTube. ”

Wright states that the company has terminated 50 channels and removed thousands of videos, under an expanded set of guidelines for determining whether content endangers minors. It has also removed advertisements from 500,000 exploitive videos under these expanded guidelines.

In addition, the company will apply “machine learning technology and automated tools” in order to discover potentially exploitive content, as well
