‘Deadly Women’ no lie

“Lady Killers: Deadly Women Throughout History” by Tori Telfer. Harper Perennial, 2017. $15.99.

When you think of serial killers throughout history, the names that come to mind are ones like Jack the Ripper, John Wayne Gacy, and Ted Bundy.

But what about Tillie Klimek, Moulay Hassan, Kate Bender? The narrative we’re comfortable with is the one where women are the victims of violent crime, not the perpetrators. In fact, serial killers are thought to be so universally, overwhelmingly male that in 1998, FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood infamously declared in a homicide conference, “There are no female serial killers.”

I picked this book on a whim, my eye caught by the bold title. I don’t read much nonfiction, but this book seemed straightforward enough that I could pick up a few new facts before the next season of Netflix’s Making a Murderer came out. What I wasn’t expecting was a thoughtful and witty book

Fairfax Co. police search for suspect in deadly stabbing

WASHINGTON — A 27-year-old man was fatally stabbed Friday night in Hybla Valley of the Alexandria section of Fairfax.

Fairfax County police say officers on patrol found the victim, Luis Ernesto Bonilla, in a wooded area in the 7100 block of Fairchild Drive near the Meadow Woods apartment complex around 11:15 p.m. Friday.

The area where Bonilla was found is right by Hybla Valley Elementary School and not far from Route One. Bonilla lived a few blocks away on Convair Drive.

Officers provided first aid to the victim until rescue personnel got to the scene, but first aid workers were not unable to revive him. Police don’t know how long the victim had been there.

Police hope this video leads to an arrest after deadly shooting …

PETERSBURG, Va. — Police released video of a man believed to be involved in a fatal Petersburg shooting. Five people were shot the night of September 17, 2017, outside Shortt’s Grocery Store at the intersection of Harding Street and Mistletoe Street.

“Police have made arrest in connection with this incident, but are now asking for help from the public in identifying a male who was observed firing a weapon from the street corner,” Petersburg Police Lt. Emanuel Chambliss said. “The male can be observed in video recovered wearing a black shirt with a design on it, possible green shorts or pants, white socks and black slip on shoes.”

Delqukis Demon Ruffin, 34, died as a result of the shooting.

Detectives later arrested Danzel J’Quan Rives, 20, of North Dinwiddie, and charged him with four counts of attempted murder, aggravated malicious wounding, and use of a firearm in commission of a felony as well
