Man acquitted in retrial for murder, arson in mother-in-law’s 1995 death – Chicago Sun

A former Naperville man who spent 22 years in prison for the 1995 death of his mother-in-law was found not guilty in a retrial Wednesday.

Following a seven-day bench trial, DuPage County Judge Liam C. Brennan found 61-year-old William Amor not guilty of murder and aggravated arson in connection with the death of Marianne Miceli, according to a statement from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

“This is the end of a nightmare for me,” Amor said in a statement released by the Illinois Innocence Project, which represented him.

“I have fought to clear my name for the last 22 years and I am so grateful that I was able to have my day in court for the truth to be heard,” Amor said. “I am looking forward to starting the next phase of my life as a free man, no longer labeled as a murderer, for the first time in a long

Death did not halt work on crime thriller

NEW YORK • Three days before before the wife of comedian Patton Oswalt died, she typed some notes on her laptop.

Among the looming tasks: “Find out from Debbi D about flashlight.” “Find out from Ken exactly what he meant about the husband or the guy in the clown suit walking down the street.”

The list catalogued potential clues she planned to chase down as she completed her book, I’ll Be Gone In The Dark, an investigation into the identity of the Golden State Killer, who committed more than 50 sexual assaults and at least 10 murders in California in the 1970s and 1980s.

She never finished it. On April 21, 2016, Oswalt, 49, found her dead in the bedroom of their Los Angeles home.

An autopsy showed that Michelle McNamara, 46, had an undiagnosed heart condition and had taken a dangerous mix of prescription drugs.

The story that she spent the last five years

Montgomery County police are investigating the apparent double homicide of a man and a woman found shot to death Thursday in a car parked in a residential parking lot in Burtonsville.

The two victims are both from Virginia. Police identified them Friday night as Ashley Susan Dickinson, 34, of Mallory Terrace in Alexandria, and Joshua Michael Frazier, 29, of Space More Circle in Woodbridge.

At about 10 p.m. Thursday, a resident saw a car parked on Aldora Circle and noticed it was running, according to police. Dickinson and Frazier were inside and appeared to be dead, and the resident called 911.

Police initially investigated the deaths as suspicious before revealing Friday night that medical examiners determined both died from gunshot wounds.

Police have asked anyone with information about the double homicide to call 240-773-5070

Exoneree kicks off speaker series on the death penalty, race, and innocence

Armstrong called the audience to give Newman a standing ovation, giving her thanks for the freedom he has today and her work to prove the innocence of the wrongfully convicted. The admiration was mutual as Newman praised Armstrong for his work as an instructor and mentor in the prison during the nearly 18 years he served.

“And to me, that’s the name of the game,” Armstrong said. “To make a difference.”

Frank Baumgartner, a political science professor, began the speaker series in 2010, with this year being the fourth installment. Baumgartner first brought the event to his POLI 203 class: Race, Innocence, and the End of the Death Penalty. Due to the small class size at the time, he decided it was not cost effective, and opened it up to the public and his students. This extension of his class to the public is part of an effort to allow the speakers

Jim won’t face trial over girlfriend’s death

LOS ANGELES – Comic actor Jim Carrey has been spared the prospect of a civil trial over the suicide of his girlfriend after the case was dismissed, his representative and court officials said Thursday.

Cathriona White’s estranged husband Mark Burton and mother Brigid Sweetman had filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the star following her overdose in September 2015, accusing him of procuring drugs under a bogus name for her.

They also alleged that the 56-year-old actor – known for a string of hit comedy movies including “The Mask,” “Liar Liar” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” – had given White three sexually-transmitted diseases.

“All I can say is the case was dismissed and I have no further comment,” Carrey’s publicist told AFP.

Documents filed at the Los Angeles Superior Court showed that a request for dismissal of the suit was submitted by the plaintiffs on January 25.

17-year-old person of interest identified in death of Jholie Moussa

Fairfax County police have arrested a 17-year-old person of interest in the murder of Alexandria teen Jholie Moussa, the department announced on Tuesday.

The juvenile, whose name has not been made public due to his age, was arrested on Jan. 18 after Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) detectives learned through interviews that Jholie had been the victim of a previously unreported assault.

The 17-year-old has been charged with felony assault but not with Jholie’s murder. He remains in the FCPD’s custody.

Jholie, 16, was first reported missing by her family on Jan. 13 after they had not seen or heard from her since the previous evening.

Though police initially did not believe that Jholie was in immediate danger, her body was found at Woodlawn Park in Alexandria on Jan. 26, and upon confirming the body’s identity, the FCPD designated the case as a homicide investigation.

“The department’s efforts towards resolving this case and bringing a

LARGO A former day care owner who has spent five years in prison for causing the death of a 1-year-old girl was back in a Pinellas County courtroom on Wednesday to prove her innocence.
