Former Medill Innocence Project private investigator files defamation lawsuit

A second lawsuit has been filed after investigations into a high-profile murder case led to two exonerations, the repeal of the death penalty in Illinois and the fall of one of Northwestern’s most distinguished professors.

Paul Ciolino, a private investigator who obtained a video confession of Alstory Simon for a 1982 double homicide, is defending his reputation — and that of Northwestern and former Medill Prof. David Protess — in a defamation lawsuit filed earlier this month. The suit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, alleges nine defendants engaged in a “conspiracy” to discredit the work of Ciolino, Protess and the then-Medill Innocence Project, since renamed the Medill Justice Project.

The suit, filed Jan. 2, claims Simon’s lawyers and the two investigators they hired made false claims in an effort to defame and discredit Ciolino’s investigation, despite continued confessions of murder by their

Former DC charter school teacher charged with child-sex abuse

A 33-year-old former teacher at a D.C. charter school has been arrested and charged with first-degree child sexual abuse after being extradited from Great Britain, D.C. police said Saturday.

Authorities said Robert Leach, who lived in Silver Spring, had fled the country after the abuse allegations were made in 2014. After he was found in England, he was extradited and charged Friday, police said.

The alleged abuse took place between 2011 and 2013 at various locations throughout the District, police said.

Authorities did not identify the charter school by name, but said it was on the 2000 block of 13th Street NW.

A check of online records indicated that Meridian Public Charter School is at 2120 13th Street NW.

The current head of the school, Candice Bobo, did not respond to calls and emails, but according to the school’s 2011-2012 annual report, a man named Robert Leach was listed as a

Former Mineral County commissioner, delegate arrested on child porn charge – Beckley Register

KEYSER, W.Va. — A former Mineral County commissioner and House of Delegates member faces a federal child pornography charge following his arrest on Dec. 8.

Stephen Sluss, 58, of Scott Depot, was charged with receipt of child pornography after West Virginia State Police investigators allege he downloaded graphic videos of girls between the ages of 5 and 7 on his home computer.

Sluss, an attorney practicing in Putnam County, was reportedly retained earlier this year by the Mineral County Commission to collect delinquent taxes.

The Mineral County Commission will be holding a special meeting Friday at 11 a.m. to “re-examine their arrangement with Sluss,” Drew Brubaker, county coordinator, said.

Investigators said Sluss used the name “mckicker40” on ChatStep, an online chatting service, where he downloaded child pornography on April 1, according to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.

Police began an investigation after ChatStep reported a user to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children,

Time ‘not on the side’ of police in Tess Richey case, former homicide detective says

“Time is not on the side of the investigators” in the Tess Richey murder case, says one former homicide detective, with days of work having been lost and a crime scene potentially compromised by what had at first been a missing persons probe.

Richey, 22, went missing in the early morning hours of Nov. 25, and was found dead on Nov. 29. Over the weekend, police released surveillance photographs of a man they’d like to speak to who was seen with Richey shortly before her death.

Last week, Mark Mendelson, a former homicide detective with Toronto police who currently works as a private investigator and consultant, said anytime a missing person investigation turns into a murder probe, it “creates more work” for police and forces them to retrace their steps.

Witnesses must be re-interviewed, video from
