Plea deal, counter offer under review in child porn case

A plea agreement is under consideration in the case of three people charged with possession of child pornography.

Parameswaran Somasundaram, Sundram Allagan and Yvonne Mesa Asuncion appeared in the Superior Court this morning for a hearing.  Attorneys for the defendants and the government acknowledged that a plea offer was presented and a counter offer was made.

“It’s a revised offer, for all three,” Assistant Attorney General Peter Santos informed the judge.

The attorneys for Somasundaram and Allagan, John Bell and Jeffery Moots acknowledged that they had received the discovery, or documents related to the case, they requested and asked for a week or two to consider the latest offer.

“We still have some evidentiary issues,” said Bell.

Asuncion’s attorney Kristin Smith said her office is waiting to review the discovery in the case specifically the pictures of the alleged child pornography that was allegedly found on her client’s cell phone.

Santos said there was nothing further

Korte’s plea: Judge rebuffs offer, sends child porn case to another judge – C

Without expounding on why, Albemarle Circuit Court Judge Cheryl Higgins rejected a plea agreement from a former UVA professor and the prosecution November 14, and said the matter will be heard by a different judge.

Walter Korte, 74, who had a long and distinguished career at the University of Virginia as a film expert, faced two counts of possession of child pornography. The plea agreement was presented in court in August. At that time, Higgins expressed reservations about the plea, asked for a pre-sentencing report and wanted to see the two images for which Korte was charged.

The case started during the summer of 2016 when Korte disposed of his porn collection in a dumpster outside Bryan Hall, where UVA’s English department is housed. University police staked out the dumpster and observed him tossing plastic bags on a couple of occasions.

Rescue and evacuation

Find an open shelter near you by texting SHELTER and your zip code to 4FEMA (43362). You can also use the FEMA mobile app. FEMA is also providing resources for people with disabilities, access and functional needs on its website.

If you’re considering evacuating your home, the Houston Chronicle is compiling a map of flooded streets.

Several counties have issued mandatory or voluntary evacuations. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is keeping a running list of those counties on his website. Keep in mind, the director of the federal Hurricane Harvey relief efforts has warned people in flooded regions not to get into their
