Prosecutor testifies informant’s mental issues not disclosed at 2009 …

BELTON — George Powell III has spent about 10 years in prison on a 2009 Bell County conviction for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, but he has always claimed he’s innocent.

The Texas Innocence Project looked into his claims and decided they had merit, so the Powell case is back in the Bell County court system as his attorneys attempt to convince state District Judge John Gauntt to recommend that Powell either deserves a new trial or should go free.

The hearings started in September and focus on video evidence showing discrepancies between the height differences of Powell and the suspected robber, and the retraction of a Bell County Jail prisoner’s testimony that originally sealed Powell’s conviction.

Innocence Project Executive Director Michael Ware and Walter Reaves have traveled between Dallas and Belton to challenge the case.

Assistant District Attorney Sean Proctor spent most of Thursday morning backing up the reputation of Demetric Smith,

Passaic prosecutor’s refusal to reinvestigate this murder is malpractice | Editorial

The brutal killing happened in Paterson in the 1990s: A 22-year-old who had recently emigrated from Peru was minding his uncle’s video store when he was robbed and fatally stabbed.

Police found a green, plaid baseball cap on the floor near his body. It didn’t belong to the victim, or to anyone else in the store. But at that time, DNA testing was rudimentary and couldn’t identify the wearer.

Two local men, Eric Kelley and Ralph Lee, were convicted based on what the Innocence Project now says were false confessions. They have spent nearly a quarter of a century in prison.

2 men confessed to murder. Their DNA tells another story.

Yet as S.P. Sullivan of NJ Advance Media reported last week, all these years later, authorities have finally gotten a DNA hit on the hat. It matches neither man, but another convicted offender in a

CA prosecutor, son of Watergate burglar, charged with child porn

A California deputy attorney general, who’s the son of a Watergate figure, has been charged with possession of child pornography.

Raymond Joseph Liddy, son of Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy, pleaded not guilty in San Diego and was released on $100,000 bond. The attorney general’s office said Wednesday it is aware of the matter and that the Liddy was placed on administrative leave.

Liddy, 53, has been a state prosecutor since 2008.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the complaint said an electronic service provider sent a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in January that a user had uploaded an image that appeared to be child porn. A month later another provider sent a similar tip to the organization.

Local and federal authorities said they traced the activity to Liddy’s home in Coronado, where a search uncovered photos on a computer and
