BREAKING NEWS: Suspect in Monday armed robberies captured in Albermarle County

WINCHESTER – The suspect in two armed robberies in Winchester on Monday morning was apprehended last night in Albemarle County.

Albermarle County authorities took 41-year-old James Edward Scott into custody about 10 p.m. after they saw a vehicle matching the description of one believed to be connected with the robberies.

The Winchester Police Department issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for the vehicle after the Hilton Garden Inn at 120 Wingate Drive was robbed around 4:35 a.m. and the 7-Eleven at 704 N. Loudoun St. was hit about 7 a.m.

Albemarle authorities searched Scott’s vehicle and found a hat that matched the description of one worn by the suspect in the 7-Eleven robbery.

Scott is being held without bond in Albemarle county.

Suspect in Mid Rivers Mall carjacking charged

ST. PETERS • A man who attacked and carjacked a driver at Mid Rivers Mall Saturday morning has been charged, police said Monday.

Darius L. Smiley, 23, of University City, faces multiple charges. Authorities are still looking for an accomplice.

The 59-year-old victim was getting in his Chevrolet Trailblazer about 11:15 a.m. Saturday when a Smiley also got in the Trailblazer, showed a gun and demanded the vehicle, police said.

The victim was injured in the face during a struggle before getting out of the Trailblazer, police said. The carjacker sped off eastbound on Interstate 70.

A short time later, a tire apparently blew on the Trailblazer, and the carjacker abandoned it on I-70 near Highway 370. Witnesses saw the man get into a white Hyundai Sonata that then drove off.

Hopewell Police seek commercial burglary suspect

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — The Hopewell Police Department needs the public’s help solving an early-morning commercial burglary.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m. Monday, officers responded to the Community Food Mart located at 325 S. Mesa Drive for a burglary alarm activation.

Their investigation determined that the lone suspect broke out the front window to the business with a hammer, removed several rolls of coins from the register and fled the business on foot.

The suspect is described as a 25- to 35-year-old white male who is roughly 5’10” to 6’0″ and 180-200 pounds with a stocky build. He was last seen wearing a dark-colored jacket with a possible attached hood, blue jeans, dark colored boots and rubber coated cotton gloves. Police said the suspect also had a dark colored piece of material covering the lower portion of face.

PETERSBURG, Va. — Authorities are asking for the public’s help to locate a suspect wanted for robbing a man at a Petersburg motel Sunday morning.

Lt. Emanuel Chambliss with the Petersburg Bureau of Police said Melissa Chatham and Sean Wallace, who is also known as Sean Johnson, used Facebook to lure a man to a room at the Flagship Inn in the 800 block of S. Crater Road at 8 a.m.

“Once in the room Wallace robbed the victim,” Chambliss said. “No weapon was displayed, but Wallace motioned that he had one during the robbery.”

Officials said warrants are on file for Wallace for robbery, conspiracy and abduction.

Chatham is in police custody, Chambliss said.

CUMBERLAND – Cumberland City Police are looking for a suspect in the Friday morning robbery of First United Bank Trust in Cumberland.

CUMBERLAND – Cumberland City Police are looking for a suspect in the Friday morning robbery of First United Bank Trust in Cumberland.
According to the Cumberland PD, at 9:27 a.m. Friday, officers responded to First United Bank on Harrison Street in Cumberland, after a hold-up alarm was received from that location.
The first arriving officers learned that a lone male suspect had entered the bank, approached a teller, and presented a note demanding money. The teller complied with the demand and gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect then exited the bank and fled the area on foot.
