Harrisonburg Police Investigating Recent Thefts from Motor Vehicles

Harrisonburg Police Department Press Release:

Harrisonburg, Va. – The Harrisonburg Police Department is investigating recent thefts from motor vehicles throughout the city, which have occurred in multiple locations. In recent years, the vehicle break-ins have occurred primarily when owners leave their vehicles unlocked during night time hours.

Thieves are now targeting both locked and unlocked vehicles, using force when necessary to gain entry. Recent thefts have occurred between Wednesday, December 6 and Wednesday, December 13.

The thefts occurred at the Smithland Road Dog Park and in the area of South Dogwood Drive, in which valuables were taken from both locations.

Police warn residents of spike in thefts from cars

Twelve vehicles targeted in one night, two cars stolen

PRINCE GEORGE – The county Police Department is urging residents to do something very simple to avoid becoming victims of crime: Lock your car doors.

The alert to citizens was prompted by an outbreak of thefts from vehicles – and thefts of vehicles – in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 24 in the Carson area. Police said unknown persons entered at least 12 vehicles and took items including sunglasses, credit cards, cash, identification cards and one handgun. In addition, two vehicles were stolen outright.

“Almost all of them resulted from unlocked doors,” Police Chief W. Keith Early told the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. “They’re not breaking windows to get in.”

County Administrator Percy Ashcraft underscored the point. “We can’t emphasize strongly enough the need to keep locking doors,” he said.

Neighbors credited for Chesterfield gun thefts arrests

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Police said quick-thinking neighbors helped crack three separate incidents Sunday at a gun shop in southern Chesterfield County.

Less than four days later, an adult male and a juvenile are behind bars.

“I was really surprised cause I thought he was a little older than that,” said Billy Adams, the owner of Adams’ Muzzleloader Gun Shop.

The first incident happened Sunday morning when a burglary at Adams’ shop netted thieves two handguns.

Sunday afternoon, Then two people walked into the gun shop Saturday afternoon and bought a box of ammo. During the transaction, Adams said one of them snatched a handgun.

When confronted, Adams said that one of them pulled up his shirt, pulled out a loaded semi-automatic, dropped the magazine out and then re-inserted it.

Then late Sunday evening, a neighbor spotted two persons around the shop and a third walking towards the side door of the house.

Thefts from Automobiles Reported in Charles County

On June 13, 2017, between midnight and 5:00 a.m., unknown suspect(s) broke into three unlocked cars in the area of Helen Court in Indian Head. Clothing and headphones were stolen. Officer S. Griffith is investigating.

On June 12, 2017, at 4:10 a.m., four males were observed trying to break into cars in the area of Marlin Court in Waldorf. Officers responded, but the suspects were gone. Further investigation showed the suspects broke into cars on Moonfish Court, Night Sergeant Court, and Paddlefish Court. Officer R. Logsdon is investigating.

On June 5, 2017, at 11:56 a.m., an officer was patrolling the area of the park and ride, 3220 Mattawoman Beantown Road in Waldorf, when he observed three cars with the passenger-side window broken out. All three vehicles were Chevy or GMC SUV’s, and the aftermarket speakers and radios had been stolen. The owners were contacted,
