DNA testing could spark push for new trial in Stacy Larson murder case

A man who says he’s being held for a murder he didn’t commit might soon have DNA test results to help make his case.

Stacy Larson, 48, was convicted of second-degree murder in McCook County for the Interstate 90 shooting death of Ronald Hilgenberg in May 1990.

Larson has always maintained his innocence, however. The South Dakota Supreme Court noted issues with the case, even as it upheld the conviction.

There was no physical evidence linking Larson to the case, for example, and a co-defendant was acquitted.

Perhaps most notable was a time-stamped receipt for

Trial set for former Capitol Hill teacher facing child porn charge

A former Seattle Academy science teacher facing a federal charge of possessing child pornography is set to go to trial in May.

Gabriel Cronin was fired from the Capitol Hill private school — after having worked there for more than a decade — following his arrest in late November.

Acting on a tip from Cronin’s cousin, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children forwarded that information to the Seattle Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit. Cronin’s cousin reportedly told investigators the former science teacher and robotics program leader is addicted, and she was compelled to report him due to his profession, according to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Cronin allegedly told investigators he uses The Onion Router to find child pornography and then deletes it afterward, the complaint states.

A forensic examination of Cronin’s work laptop revealed hundreds of thumbnail files, the complaint

Jim won’t face trial over girlfriend’s death

LOS ANGELES – Comic actor Jim Carrey has been spared the prospect of a civil trial over the suicide of his girlfriend after the case was dismissed, his representative and court officials said Thursday.

Cathriona White’s estranged husband Mark Burton and mother Brigid Sweetman had filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the star following her overdose in September 2015, accusing him of procuring drugs under a bogus name for her.

They also alleged that the 56-year-old actor – known for a string of hit comedy movies including “The Mask,” “Liar Liar” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” – had given White three sexually-transmitted diseases.

“All I can say is the case was dismissed and I have no further comment,” Carrey’s publicist told AFP.

Documents filed at the Los Angeles Superior Court showed that a request for dismissal of the suit was submitted by the plaintiffs on January 25.

Judge Upholds Decision To Deny New Trial For Steven Avery …

Less than two months since they last faced each other in court, a Wisconsin judge has upheld her decision to deny Steven Avery a new trial for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach. Circuit Court Judge Angela Sutkiewicz had previously ruled on October 3 that “The defendant has failed to establish any grounds that would trigger the right to a new trial in the interests of justice.” Avery was the subject of the 2015 Netflix series “Making A Murderer,” which chronicled his troubled history with law enforcement, which includes a 1985 wrongful conviction on sexual assault charges for which he served 18 years in prison before being exonerated due to DNA evidence.

Following the October 3 ruling, Avery’s lawyer Kathleen Zellner had asked Judge Sutkiewicz to reconsider. However, in a decision filed Tuesday, Sutkiewicz upholds that “The court does not find that the defendant’s interpretations of the
